Glenn Phillips ruled out of Zimbabwe T20I Tri-Series: New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of the Zimbabwe tour due to a right groin injury. Phillips suffered the injury during the Major League Cricket finals ahead of the tour.

Phillips was examined upon arrival in Zimbabwe and it was believed that he would take several weeks to recover. Tim Robinson, who joined the squad as cover, will remain with the team for the rest of the T20 tri-series with South Africa. Phillips played 10 matches for Washington Freedom in the MLC, including the final which they lost to MI New York, and scored 186 runs at an average of 62 and a strike rate of 139.84.

Earlier this year, Phillips was also ruled out of most of the IPL due to a similar groin injury while playing as a substitute for his team Gujarat Titans.

New Zealand are also missing Finn Allen, who was initially named in the squad but was later ruled out after suffering a foot injury while playing for the San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket.

New Zealand’s new head coach Rob Walter said, “It is obviously disappointing to lose a player of Glenn’s calibre. Just like Finn, we are very sad for Glenn that he will not be able to play in this series.”

Walter further said, “We know he was desperate to get on the field for the Blackcaps, but unfortunately, he will not be able to do so in this series. We know he will work hard to get back on the field, and I am eagerly waiting to see when that will happen.”

Phillips, who will now head back to New Zealand along with two other reserve players, Mitch Hay and Jimmy Neesham, was also part of New Zealand’s Test squad for the upcoming two Tests against Zimbabwe. The Blackcaps are yet to announce a replacement for him.
