Former India off-spinner R Ashwin has been ruled out of the 2025-26 season of the Big Bash League (BBL) due to a knee injury, which requires surgery.
Ashwin, who was set to create history by becoming the first male Indian cricketer to play in the Australian T20 franchise tournament, was signed by Sydney Thunder for the entire BBL season.
Ashwin said in a statement to Sydney Thunder
“I am deeply saddened to miss BBL 15. My focus now is on recovery and a strong comeback,” Ashwin said in a statement to Sydney Thunder. He added, “I am grateful to the Thunder family and fans for the warmth they have shown me. Trent (Copeland) and the entire management made me feel part of the club from the very first conversation I had with them.”

Ashwin further said, “If rehab and travel plans allow, I would love to spend time with the team and meet the fans at the end of the season. Wishing both Thunder teams a great year.” Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland was very saddened to learn of Ashwin’s injury, especially because a 39-year-old Ashwin’s participation in the tournament would have opened up opportunities for him.
Ashwin announced his retirement from the IPL in August this year and agreed to play at least three matches for the Thunder in the latter half of the BBL season. This agreement was based on the off-spinner’s commitment to playing in the ILT20, where he commanded a maximum base price of US$120,000.
Sam Billings, Lockie Ferguson, and Shadab Khan will be the Thunder’s three overseas players in the 15th edition.
Sydney Thunder squad for BBL 15: Wes Agar, Tom Andrews, Cameron Bancroft, Sam Billings (England), Ollie Davies, Lockie Ferguson (New Zealand), Matthew Gilkes, Chris Green, Ryan Hadlee, Shadab Khan (Pakistan), Sam Konstas, Nathan McAndrew, Blake Nikitaras, Aiden O’Connor, Daniel Sams, Tanveer Sangha, David Warner
