Dimuth Karunaratne set to retire from test

Dimuth Karunaratne, a name synonymous with Sri Lankan Test cricket for over a decade, is set to retire from international cricket after the second Test against Australia in Galle.1 This momentous occasion will also mark his 100th Test match, a fitting culmination to a career defined by resilience, consistency, and leadership.2 The 36-year-old’s decision comes after a recent dip in form, with just 182 runs in his last seven Tests, including a single half-century against New Zealand in September 2024.3 While his recent performances might have prompted his decision, they do little to diminish the immense contribution Karunaratne has made to Sri Lankan cricket.

Karunaratne’s Test journey began at the very same ground in Galle back in 2012 against New Zealand.4 His debut was a mixed bag, a duck in the first innings followed by an unbeaten 60 in the second, contributing to Sri Lanka’s resounding 10-wicket victory. This debut, though a microcosm of the ups and downs inherent in a long career, foreshadowed the grit and determination that would become hallmarks of Karunaratne’s batting. Over the course of 99 Tests (and counting), he has amassed 7,172 runs, adorned with 16 centuries, his highest score a majestic 244 against Bangladesh in 2021.5 While his Test record speaks volumes, Karunaratne also represented Sri Lanka in 50 ODIs and 34 T20Is, even scoring a lone ODI century against Ireland in 2023, demonstrating his commitment to all formats of the game.6

Karunaratne’s rise to prominence wasn’t instantaneous. While his maiden Test century came against New Zealand in Christchurch in 2014, it was from 2015 onwards that he truly cemented his place as Sri Lanka’s premier opening batsman. His consistent performances at the top of the order provided stability and solidity to the Sri Lankan batting lineup. A testament to his unwavering focus and endurance was his 196 against Pakistan in a day-night Test in 2017.7 This innings, played under challenging conditions, showcased his ability to grind out runs and wear down opposition bowlers.

In 2019, Karunaratne’s leadership qualities were recognized, and he was appointed captain of the Sri Lankan Test team.8 He embraced the responsibility with characteristic determination, leading the team to a historic 2-0 series victory over South Africa in their own backyard. This triumph was particularly significant as it marked the first time an Asian team had achieved a Test series win in South Africa, a testament to Karunaratne’s tactical acumen and his ability to inspire his teammates.

Karunaratne’s contributions to Test cricket have not gone unnoticed. He has been named in the ICC Test Cricket Team of the Year thrice – in 2018, 2021, and 2023 – a recognition of his consistent excellence and his impact on the game.9 These accolades underscore his status as one of the most dependable and respected opening batsmen in the world.

Beyond the runs and the records, Dimuth Karunaratne’s legacy will be one of resilience, leadership, and unwavering commitment to his team. He epitomizes the spirit of Sri Lankan cricket, a spirit that has overcome numerous challenges and continues to thrive. As he prepares to bid farewell to the international arena, Karunaratne leaves behind a rich legacy, inspiring a new generation of Sri Lankan cricketers and leaving an indelible mark on the game he loves. His century of Tests will be a fitting tribute to a career that has been defined by grit, determination, and a deep love for the game.
