The future of Indian cricket coaching is shrouded in uncertainty as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announces plans to hire a new head coach. This news comes despite Rahul Dravid’s recent contract extension in November 2023.

Rahul Dravid’s Time Up?

Dravid, who took charge of the Indian team in November 2021, saw his initial contract extended after the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, that extension only lasts until June 2024, coinciding with the upcoming T20 World Cup.

The BCCI’s decision to open applications for a new coach suggests Dravid’s position isn’t guaranteed. While Jay Shah, the BCCI Secretary, confirmed Dravid could reapply, there will be no automatic renewal. This move opens the door for potential replacements, both Indian and foreign.

A foreign coach is a possibility.

The BCCI has not ruled out the possibility of hiring a foreign coach. This represents a shift from tradition, with India historically favoring homegrown coaches. The decision will ultimately be made by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).

One Coach for All Formats?

Another point of discussion is the concept of separate coaches for different formats, a strategy employed by some international boards. However, Shah downplayed this possibility, citing the presence of all-format players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, and the lack of precedent for such a system in India.

Impact Player Rule Under Review

The recently introduced “Impact Player” rule, which allows teams to substitute a player mid-innings, has received criticism from players like Indian captain Rohit Sharma. Shah indicated that the BCCI will discuss the rule with stakeholders and decide on its future.

Whether Dravid retains his position, a foreign coach takes the helm, or a different approach is adopted remains to be seen. “Impact player was a test case. Two new Indian players are getting a chance in the IPL,” he stressed on being told that the rule hampers the development of all-rounders. “We will discuss with the stakeholders – franchises and broadcasters – before deciding on the continuation of the Impact Player. It’s not permanent, but no one has provided feedback against the rule.“
