Batter Collapses After Being Hit by Dangerous Throw During Run: The Sri Lankan women’s team is playing against the South African women’s team at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. In this match, the Sri Lankan team won the toss and elected to bat first. Rain halted the match after 12 overs. A major incident occurred during Sri Lanka’s innings when their opening batsman, Vishmi Gunaratne, was seriously injured by a dangerous throw and was carried off the field on a stretcher.

During the fifth over of the Sri Lankan women’s innings, Vishmi Gunaratne stepped forward and played a shot towards mid-on on the fourth ball bowled by Marizanne Kapp of South Africa, after which she attempted a single. Meanwhile, a fielder in the area attempted to run her out, but the ball hit Vishmi’s knee instead of hitting the wicket, causing her to suffer significant pain and was taken off the field on a stretcher. Vishmi had faced 16 balls and scored 12 runs at the time.

Sri Lanka Cricket also provided an update on Vishmi Gunaratne’s injury, posting on the social media platform X. Vishmi was hit on the left knee while attempting a run. She is now under the supervision of the medical team and has not suffered any serious injuries. Team management has confirmed that Gunaratne will be able to return to bat. The Sri Lankan women’s team has played a total of four matches in this ODI World Cup, losing two of them and two matches being abandoned due to rain. Sri Lanka currently sits at number 7 in the points table with two points and a net run rate of -1.526. South Africa, meanwhile, have played four matches so far, winning three and losing one.
