The most successful Test captain in the history of Indian Test cricket is Virat Kohli, who has led the Indian team in 68 matches, winning 40, drawing 11 and losing 17. Kohli has a win percentage of 58.42% which is the highest ever for any Indian captain.
2. MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni, popularly known as Captain Cool, is India’s second most successful captain with 27 wins, 18 losses and 15 draws in 60 matches. Team India’s performance in the Test format under Dhoni’s captaincy was average. Dhoni retired from the Test format with a 45% win percentage.
3. Sourav Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly is the third most successful Indian captain, having led India to 21 wins, 13 losses and 15 draws in 49 Test matches, giving him a win percentage of 42.85%. Under the Ganguly era, India learnt the art of winning Test matches abroad, in SENA countries, one of which was a famous innings win at Headingley, England in 2002.
4. Mohammad Azharuddin
Mohammad Azharuddin is one of the successful captains of India. He displayed great strategy as a captain, yet he did not get much success as a captain in the Test format. Azhar won 14 matches and lost 14, while 19 matches were drawn, thus his percentage was 29.78%.
5. Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma has clearly shown his form since taking over the captaincy of Indian cricket in 2022. Although he has missed many matches, whenever he has captained India, the team has performed well most of the time. So far, Rohit has led India in 16 Test matches and has won 10, lost 4 and drawn only 2 times.
