The format for the 2027 World Cup will differ significantly from previous editions and will be much longer. Under the new structure, teams reaching the final could potentially play up to 15 matches.
McDonald emphasized that the risk of player burnout and injury increases substantially during such a prolonged event. He argued that to maintain the competitive quality of this premier cricketing spectacle, teams need the option of a larger pool of backup players.

To reinforce his argument, McDonald cited the challenges faced during the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India:
- Travis Head (Australia): Missed the opening matches due to a hand fracture sustained at the start of the tournament.
- Kane Williamson (New Zealand): Remained sidelined for the initial fixtures due to injury.
The strict 15-player limit left teams with very limited options regarding bench strength.
Injuries to major stars like Head and Williamson had become a significant gamble for teams, as they were unable to replace them immediately or field players who were 100% fit.
Key Benefits of Increasing World Cup Squad Limit to 17
According to McDonald, raising the squad limit to 17 would offer several key advantages to team management:
