Former West Indies all-rounder Bernard Julien passes away: Former West Indies all-rounder Bernard Julien has passed away at the age of 75. Julian was part of the winning team of the 1957 ODI World Cup, which won the first title of this global tournament. Julian performed brilliantly in that World Cup, taking four wickets for 20 runs against Sri Lanka in the group stage match, and four wickets for 27 runs against New Zealand in the semi-final.

Julian scored 26 runs off 37 balls in the final against Australia, playing a key role in the team’s title. Julian emerged as the team’s best all-rounder in that tournament, displaying outstanding performances in bowling, batting, and fielding. Clive Lloyd, who led the West Indies to two World Cups under his captaincy, remembered Julian, saying, “He always gave more than his 100 percent.

 

He never shied away from his responsibilities, and I could always count on Julian with both bat and ball. He gave his best at all times. What a wonderful cricketer he was.” We all respected him immensely. He was a lot of fun, and everyone around him loved him. I remember we won a Test match at Lord’s, and Julien stood there signing autographs for a long time. He was greatly respected wherever we went.

Julian played 24 Test matches and 12 ODIs for the West Indies. He scored 866 runs and took 50 wickets in the red-ball format. In ODI cricket, he scored 86 runs and took 18 wickets. Cricket West Indies also mourned Julien’s passing. Cricket West Indies President Kishore Shelo said in a statement, “As we honor Bernard Julien, we recognize his significance. We express our deepest condolences to Bernard Julien’s family, friends, and loved ones. His passing reminds us that a life of purpose never leaves us. Cricket West Indies stands with you in this time of grief. His contribution to West Indies cricket will always be immortal.”
