IND vs AUS: Why was Rohit Sharma stripped of the ODI captaincy?: Rohit Sharma has been stripped of India’s ODI captaincy. The BCCI has announced the squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia. The squad includes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, but Shubman Gill has been named captain. Gill is already the Test captain and has now been given the ODI captaincy as well.
The Rohit-Virat duo will play their first international match since the Champions Trophy final on March 9th, in the ODI series against Australia. Meanwhile, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar spoke openly about Rohit being stripped of the ODI captaincy.
Rohit Sharma Stripped of ODI Captaincy
Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar stated that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup is not yet certain. Therefore, Rohit was not named captain. He has been consulted on the matter. At the same time, it was not possible to have three different captains for all three formats. We will have to think about 2027 at some stage. Therefore, Gill has been appointed captain in two formats.

Rohit Sharma ODI Captaincy Record
Rohit Sharma took over the ODI captaincy from Virat Kohli before the 2021 tour of South Africa. He has captained India in a total of 56 matches, winning 42 and losing 12. One match was tied and one ended in a no-result.
Rohit Sharma himself had said that if India had won the 2023 World Cup, he would probably retire from ODI cricket. However, the heartbreaking loss in the final kept his desire to win a World Cup alive, and that is why he has continued playing ODIs.
Shubman Gill’s ODI Career
Shubman Gill has played 55 ODIs so far, scoring 2775 runs, including eight centuries. He averages 59.04 and has a strike rate of 99. Gill lacks much captaincy experience in this format. He has never captained in an ODI.
